When Your Motivation Ghosts You
Let’s be honest, some mornings, my yoga mat looks like I am playing The Floor is Lava with my boys. It’s there, waiting, silent, and reminding me of all the promises I made last Sunday night while sipping tea and feeling ambitious. But here’s the truth I’ve learned: motivation is fickle, but friendship? That’s the secret sauce.
We all know consistency is the magic word when it comes to working out, but it’s also the most slippery. So what if we stopped chasing discipline like it’s a unicorn and started chasing brunch dates with our workout buddies instead? I think I am onto something here!
The Power of a Workout Wingwoman
You know that friend who texts, “I’ll be there in ten, wear the sparkly leggings”? That’s your accountability angel. Having a workout friend isn’t just about having company—it’s about turning movement into a shared story.
When one of you doesn’t feel like showing up, the other one’s energy becomes the spark you need. You’re not just sweating; you’re laughing, venting, and maybe even planning a post-class omelet.
From Solo Slogs to Shared Playlists
There’s science behind this too. Studies show that working out with a friend increases consistency, intensity, and enjoyment. Translation: you’re more likely to stick with it when you’re having fun. Cue the incredible playlist.
And let’s face it, everything is better with a soundtrack and a sidekick. Think of Elle Woods strutting into Harvard, but instead of a courtroom, it’s you two walking into Pilates class with iced coffees and matching determination. Gosh, I love that movie!
Make It Social, Not Stressful
The goal isn’t to become a fitness influencer (too much pressure) it’s to move your body in a way that feels like a celebration, not a chore. So here’s an idea: schedule your workouts like you would brunch. Pick a time, a place, and a post-sweat treat. Or, maybe just a coffee. You choose!
Wait. Maybe it’s a smoothie bar, maybe it’s a walk through the farmers’ market, maybe it’s just collapsing on each other’s couches to watch old episodes of Friends. I can keep going, I have a ton of ideas, but you get me.
The point is, keep it fun. Keep it human.
The 80/20 of Working Out (and Living)
You’ve heard of the 80/20 rule for eating, right? Eat nourishing food 80% of the time, and enjoy life’s delicious chaos the other 20%. Well, apply that same grace to movement.
Eighty percent consistency beats one hundred percent perfection. Missing a day or two doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re a person with a life. And your body doesn’t keep score; it just loves when you show up again.
Callout Box
Try This: The Brunch Buddy Pact Text your friend right now and make a pact: once a week, you’ll do a 30-minute movement session together (walk, dance, stretch, whatever gets you laughing). Then you’ll reward yourselves with a mocktail brunch. Try my favorite: muddle fresh strawberries and mint, splash in lime juice, and top with sparkling water. Cheers to endorphins and friendship.
Progress, Not Perfection
You don’t need to run marathons or master crow pose. If you want to though, I would also be into that. The thing is, you just need to keep moving in ways that make you feel alive. And when you pair that with someone who makes you laugh until you can’t breathe, you’ll find that consistency becomes effortless.
Because here’s the real secret: we stick with what feels good. Not to mention, the real, supportive, messy, hilarious kind of friendship feels really good.
Your Turn
Grab your sneakers, call your favorite person, and make a date that’s equal parts sweat and sparkle. Remember, your body doesn’t need punishment, it needs partnership.
And if you ever forget why you started, just picture your brunch friend waiting with an iced latte and that look that says, “You’ve got this.”
