The Pretty Truth About Watching The Devil Wears Prada 2 in Your Midlife Era
This movie hit me hard this weekend… like unexpectedly, sit-there-for-a-second-after-it-ended kind of hard. And anytime something does that to me, I know I need to write about it. Because if it stirred something in me, I have a feeling it’s going to stir something in you too.
Because yes… The Devil Wears Prada 2 came out this past weekend, and my girlfriends and I went to see it in the theater. And let me just say, there is nothing quite like sitting in those seats with your friends, watching a story that feels both brand new and somehow deeply familiar at the same time.
It felt like a full circle moment. We’ve all grown up. We’ve lived a little. And now we’re watching these characters again through a completely different lens.
And wow… did it hit differently.
It’s Not About the Job… It’s About the Identity
Andy didn’t just take a job. She slowly started becoming someone she didn’t recognize. And if you’re in your midlife era like me, that part hits a little too close to home. Because how many of us have woken up one day and thought, “Wait… when did I start living like this? And is this even what I want?”
The Pretty Truth is… it happens quietly. One compromise at a time. One “this is just temporary” decision after another. Until suddenly, you’re looking at your life wondering where you went.
And watching Andy realize that? That moment when she chooses herself again? That’s the kind of plot twist we all deserve.
Miranda Isn’t the Villain Everyone Thinks She Is
Okay, let’s talk about it.
Because I know I’m not the only one who walked out of that theater thinking… was Miranda Priestly actually the villain? Or was she just a woman who knew exactly who she was and refused to shrink for anyone?
Now don’t get me wrong… she was tough. Demanding. Maybe a little terrifying. But she was also unapologetic. Focused. Successful.
And if we’re being honest, society doesn’t always know what to do with women like that.
The Pretty Truth is… confidence in women is often labeled as “too much.” And this movie does a beautiful job of showing how uncomfortable that can make people. But instead of judging it this time, I found myself respecting it.
You Can Have It All… But At What Cost?
This is the question the movie dances around the entire time.
Success. Ambition. Recognition. The kind of career people dream about.
But what are you trading for it?
Andy starts losing pieces of her relationships, her values, her time. And I think that’s where this movie really pulls you in, because it forces you to ask yourself… what actually matters to me?
Not what looks good on paper. Not what impresses other people. But what feels good in your life.
The Pretty Truth is… there is no one-size-fits-all answer. But there is power in being honest with yourself about what you’re willing to sacrifice… and what you’re not.
Why I Loved It
I loved it because it was fun. It was nostalgic. It gave me all the fashion and drama I wanted walking in.
But more than that, I loved it because it made me think.
It reminded me that confidence doesn’t always look soft and likable. Sometimes it looks bold. Sometimes it looks like walking away. And sometimes it looks like staying… but doing it on your own terms.
And maybe that’s why this movie hit so hard. Because we’re not watching it as who we used to be.
We’re watching it as who we are now.
And suddenly… it’s not just a movie.
It’s a mirror.
